Course @ DAE: A Message for Oblivion

A 4 week course which will run as part of the Open Design Spaces at Design Academy Eindhoven. A Message for Oblivion will explore the creation of sensing devices, to propose different ways of feeling in the future. The Open Design Spaces are an opportunity for students to get acquainted with 'research through design' and participants are stimulated to work on prototypes, reflecting on what design research implies. For the event, we will count with the participation of IJsfontein, Superflux, G-Motiv project partners and the Olfactive Design Studio (ODS) from Internation Flavours and Fragrances (IFF).

Smell Triggers @ Krakow Theatrical Reminiscences 2012

The Reminiscences Festival focuses on performing art since its launch in 1975, however this year there will be a strong representation of artists who use the achievements of science in their work, including Stelarc and Jae Rhim Lee. Smell Triggers will be screened alongside 6 films, as part of the programme 'Enter the Future', under the bioart section.

Aqua Vita on show @ Transnatural Festival 2012

Aqua Vita will be shown during the Transnatural Festival, at the NEMO Science Center in Amsterdam. The festival presents an experience of innovation and a glimpse of the future with art, design, business and scientific examples. The third edition of the festival has grown considerably since its inception. The programme comprises this year of a month long interdisciplinary exhibition, a two day conference and a weekend of music and performance.

On July 5th I will be giving a talk at the Minding Animals conference in Utrecht, stop by!
Minding Animals Utrecht is the second in a series of conferences about scientific, ethical and social issues related to human interactions with and uses of animals. The aim of the conference is to bring together academics from different areas (animal welfare, animal ethics, and animal studies in general) with politicians and a broad variety of interest groups. The conference offers a platform for exchange of information about research developments, debates about controversial political and ethical issues concerning the treatment of animals and a variety of cultural activities around animals.

Research Associate @ Design Academy Eindhoven

I have been selected as a Research Associate for (CRISP) the Creative Industry Scientific Research Programme, a Dutch government funded initiative, consisting of 8 projects, with the aim of developing new markets for the creative industry, by forming collaborations between both commercial and academic institutes. Starting April 1st, I will be involved in the project G-Motiv, a collaboration between Design Academy Eindhoven and TU Delf. The G-Motiv research project will focus on the use of games as a motivator/ trigger for behavioural change. Apart from fundamental research on game elements, gameplay, motivation and behaviour, prototypes will also be developed in case studies. The focus is specifically on 3 target groups: elderly (physical), addicts (mental) and employers (social).

Funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), and published by Open Humanities Press (OHP) (http://openhumanitiespress.org), Living Books About Life is a series of curated, open access books about life - with life understood both philosophically and biologically - which provide a bridge between the humanities and the sciences. Produced by a globally-distributed network of writers and editors, the books in the series repackage existing open access science research by clustering it around selected topics whose unifying theme is life: e.g., air, agriculture, bioethics, cosmetic surgery, electronic waste, energy, neurology and pharmacology. Smellscapes is included in The Life of Air: Dwelling, Communicating, Manipulating, edited by Monika Bakke.
